In this newsletter we're sharing an urgent appeal from Nourhan as well as a joyful update from Mona's school.

Nourhan needs to replace her mold-infested tent immediately

Both of Nourhan's children (7-year-old Najat and 4-year-old Mohammed) suffer from severe asthma. Earlier this month, Najat was hospitalized for 9 days because of a respiratory crisis. Mohammed was hospitalized earlier in the year. Each time is not only frightening and exhausting for Nourhan and the children; it also creates large medical bills she can't pay without outside support.

The children's asthma is exacerbated by the constant dust, lack of sanitation, and rats. Their tent has become infested with black mold, and Nourhan urgently needs to replace the tent to protect their health. A number of people have donated to her campaign recently, but she won't be able to pay the hospital bill and replace their tent without additional support.

Mona's school brings joy and learning to 180 children

Many of you first met Mona Zahed when her family was still living in a tent, where she recorded the beloved recipes that went on to become Tabkha: Recipes from Under the Rubble. Talented Coffees for Gaza illustrators created beautiful images to accompany the recipes.

When Tabkha became a success, Mona, who has such a big heart, decided to open a desperately-needed school in her community. This year there were about 180 students, served by 18 teachers and staff. Families pay a nominal fee to attend, with most of the school's costs paid for by donations and Tabkha proceeds.

There have been many challenges, such as the rising costs of materials while borders remained closed. Mona and the staff have used their creativity and resourcefulness to keep the school going, such as using recycled materials for teaching tools.

The children celebrated Land Day to remind their children of the connection between Palestinians and their land. During the celebration the children planted a few saplings. Mona hopes they can offer a summer camp to provide the children with much-needed recreation.
